2002 SPRING BLACK BEAR HUNT REPORT
Spring
bear 2002 was another very successful year. A couple
of the 4 hunter groups saw as many as 60-70 different
bears in one week. It was by far the latest spring I
have ever seen though with 2 feet of snow still around
on May 20 which brought the bear sightings down for
the first couple of hunts. Sightings really picked up
in mid May though with the limited food available. Some
baits had 15 to 20 bears working them. Jeff Vaughn from
Arizona saw 14 bears in one evening and several guys
saw 10 or more in one sitting.
We took out 16 non-resident hunters and 2 residents
who were on a 3 day hunt I had donated to the Elk Foundation.
We ended up shoot-ing 20 bears. Six of the guys shot
2 bears and 5 colored bears were taken. One of the biggest
bears we have ever shot was taken by Chris Jordan from
Maryland.
It was an absolutely huge 21 7/16 score skull
bear.It weighed at least 400 lbs with a 52 inch chest
girth and it's hide squared out at 7 1/2 feet. Chris
said he knew it was a big one when it sat on it's butt
beside the 3 foot high barrel and was a foot taller
than it. The next biggest bear was shot by Henry
Little from Saskatchewan off one of our 6 year old
baits. It was a big, beautiful cinammon colored boar
that weighed around the 400 Ib mark. It's skull
was a huge 20 0/16 and the hide squared out at
7 feet. The next biggest bear was one with a
flawless shiny coat. It was taken by Tony Harwell
from Texas on the first snowy hunt. It squared out in
the upper 6 foot mark and the skull was 18 12/16.
Several other large boars were taken that were just
below the 18 inch skull mark and had hides that squared
over 6 feet.
Overall
it was a good year even with the very late start. Several
big bears were seen and even shot at but not taken,
including a seven foot blonde so next year should be
just as good or better. We are going to run the 4 weeks
of hunters starting May 11 till June 8 in 2003. This
will fit with what has been the peak good hunting over
the last several years (the season is open April 15
till June 15). I am half filled for 2003 so phone
right away if you are interested in a great spring bear
hunt with Mike's Outfitting Ltd.
