1999 MULE DEER and ANTELOPE HUNT REPORT


We had another great season, bowhunting for mule deer and antelope. We saw and had chances at some of the biggest muley bucks we've ever seen. Several 30" wide, 190 plus score bucks were encountered and almost everybody had a few close opportunities at Pope & Young bucks. The antelope buck quality was also really good with 14 inch and better, 70-80 score bucks a common sight. A few 80 plus inchers were also shot at.

We took 16 hunters who killed 9 mule deer bucks for a 57% success rate, which is down a bit from other years but still respectable. The 2 biggest bucks was a 26" wide, 173 score deer taken by Joe Soto from Wisconsin and a 170 buck shot by "The bear killer" Zig Kertenis from Connecticut. Carl Miller from Michigan came on his 4th mule deer hunt and shot on video his 4th buck, a 167 incher. His previous 3 deer score 185, 180 & 155. The bucks shot by the other hunters were all nice deer, which they can be proud of.

This was also the year of the giant antelope. A really, heavy 80 score buck was decoyed in and shot by Mark McQueen, from Texas. It paired up nicely with his 147 muley, which he took on the same hunt. Tom Battinelli from New Jersey was a close second with a 76 incher. Joe Soto also got an antelope scoring 73. Carmen Nuccio from Connecticut scored on a nice 70 inch buck. Danny Kelly from Maryland shot a 14 1/2" antelope, which had both prongs broke off but still scored 67. He also got a 162" mule deer. Eight guys came on the antelope combo. hunt and killed 8 antelope bucks for a fantastic first time 100% kill success.
