MIKE'S
OUTFITTING
1999 SPRING BLACK BEAR HUNT REPORT
Spring bear 1999 was another
successful year with everybody seeing bears and several
big bears being taken. We moved the camp about 60 miles
north into the centre of our best area close to the Peace
River. We also reduced the size of the camp from 28 hunters
down to 16. This made for a more personalized and relaxed
outfit that still had our usual high quality standards.
All the baits were accessible by truck and four wheeler
within 15 miles of camp and the majority of them were
new sites. We did reasonably well on big bears with 5
of them shot for a 31 % success rate.
Bud
Van Rooyen from Texas got his first bow killed animal
with a good sized black bear weighing about 350 lbs.
and having a skull of 18 12/16.
Bud's hunting partner Mike Van Dorfy also shot
a 300 plus lb. bear. It's skull went 18 6/16.
Luck was on Michael Ambur from South Dakota's side
when he came on his 3 rd hunt with us and took
his
2nd P&Y bear scoring 19 8/16. Michael's 1998
bear scored 20 4/16. Both are awesome bears!
The
King of the Camp was bow killed by Steve Boster
from Texas. The huge bear had a skull of 20 6/16
and a body weight of 450 lbs. Steve's hunting
partner Greg Almond shot a beautiful 300 lb.
cinnamon colored bear that scored just under the 18
inch mark. Greg also took advantage of Alberta's 2
bear limit and arrowed the biggest female that we
have ever seen, a 350 lb. old dry sow. The happiest and
most excited hunter had to be Dan Van Laar from
South Dakota after he took a gorgeous rare blonde bear.
The
average number of different bears seen was about 8-1 0
and the maximum amount was 20-25. Three colored bears
were shot. Our overall number of bears killed was down
quite a bit with 11 bears for 16 hunters. This was because
of trophy hunting return clients and everybody doing their
best not to shoot females. It was also a late, cool and
very windy spring. Thanks to everybody who came bear
hunting with us and made it a very enjoyable and successful
season.
The year 2000 season will run from May 8 to June
5. It is tentatively booked full as of June '99 but cancellations
do occur so keep in touch if you are interested. The
2001 season is half full and will run about the same
dates.
Our great
bear video is still available for $12.00 U.S.
Funds. If you send a cheque payable to Mike Ukrainetz
we will send you one right away.
